Hi Hayden,
 
Typically you would have a workshop and then an exam. The HGFA doesn't actually have a syllabus for this certification. Each Instructor has typically used information from CASA and other organisations to put together their own course. The links provided by everyone gives you all the information you need. Hi Hayden and Ant,
 
Yes I am interested in becoming VHF certified for free flying and comp cross country purposes.
 
I see it as part of pilot development.
 
Ant thanks for the aerodrome input very useful.
 
FYI if we don not get sufficient numbers from our club our fellow pilots from the Newcastle Hang Gliding Club are also running a VHF certification session at 7.00 p.m. 29 September as part of their monthly meeting - Merewether South Leagues Club.

The endorsement will be managed through NHGC club and issued by HGFA.

Study up beforehand. There will be a short theory session before the exam.

Here's a .gpx file for download to garmin (and whatever else is compatible) gps with the aerodromes at which we may need to conduct vhf ops. It's a work in progress so if you think of anymore that you/we may need, let me know and I will add them. There may well be one or two more military ones around the lower hunter for example.

I have set it up with the aerodrome name and ctaf as the waypoint name and added a 10Nm (18.5km) proximity alert.

AIM: To provide a funcompetition series in NSW aimed at novice and intermediate XC and comp pilots.The series will also provide a great training opportunity for advanced XC andcomp pilots and will allow others to learn from these pilots in a low stresscomp environment

ERSA is where you will find all the info on all the aerodromes in question.

To make life a little easier, I am going to enter all the aerodromes I think I might go near as waypoints in my gps, include the ctaf in the waypoint name and add a 10Nm proximity alert for each one. That way, if I get to the 10Nm radius my gps will beep at me and display the ctaf onscreen. If you think you may go near one it would be advisable to set your gps to 'GO TO' that point as then you can make an accurate call re: your location in relation to the aerodrome, as that's the whole point.

The good news is that subject to the rain staying away we will be commencing the northern access road 3 -4 day upgrade works at Glennies Creek/Lake St Clair early next week.

Officially this site is known as Breakneck Ridge. Adds to the allure.
Update 30 August

We have secured funding from the NSW HPA body, permissions from regional and local (Glennies) State Water representatives, approvals from the local land lessee and have chosen and awarded a successful contractor.

Based on reports from the weekend that the Glennies northern access track is dry the contractor is targeting commencement early next week and completion within 3-4 days.

Start date assumes no rain to ensure operator safety on the excavator.

The objective is to give us access to the site - officially known as "Breakneck Ridge "- within a few days of significant rain in the area rather than the current situation of 10-12 days waitng for it to dry out.

I will post more detail and before/after shots when complete.

Project History
The objective and confirmed funding justification is to improve
access to this site year round to contribute to the training and

Approach and ideal time frames

  1. Inspect with independent contractor and NSWHGFA representative southern access road and scope effort and requirements.
  2. Saturday Secure NSWHGFA agreement to scope.
  3. Monday Secure initial independent contractor quote and availability for scoped work.
  4. Friday 7 Confirm agreement for funding amount from NSWHGFA.
  5. Monday 10- Wed 12 Contact State Water and indicate willingness to assist in road upkeep. Rapport building. Advise will confirm lessees agreement once received.
  6. Wed 12 Contact lessees
  7. Wed 12-14. Rapport building and thanks for historical support. Advise State Water are supportive. Confirm approach for restricted vehicle numbers /car pooling, waiver of rights and supervised key access. Secure lessee agreement
  8.  Confirm formal funding and payment schedule
  9.  Commission successful contractor and confirm timing
  10.  Advise all parties of works commencement and duration.
  11. TBA Commence road upgrade Inspect works and approve upon completion to scope
  12. Pay contractor
